About The Fund

John R. Dexter coaching a string quartet in an office

The John R. Dexter Music Fund was created in 2025 to celebrate and carry on the legacy and spirit of John R. Dexter – renowned violist, beloved coach and teacher, and member of the Manhattan String Quartet for more than 40 years.

John passed away in 2023 leaving behind countless students and colleagues who recognized his special gift for sharing his love of music. His inspiration touched the lives of hundreds of musicians, and he shared with all his passion for chamber music.

The Fund will award scholarships to deserving musicians for workshops, festivals, and educational programs. The Fund will award these scholarships to musicians of all ages, to young professionals and adult amateurs alike, based on the principle that music should be available to all, and can be enjoyed by and performed by musicians of all levels and life experience. It is a founding belief of the Fund that music is a universal need and benefit, and we seek to facilitate its growth in all who seek its beauty and transformative power.

As scholarships are awarded we will share information about the individuals or groups who have benefited from the Fund’s resources.
